Today on my birthday, I remember twenty years ago
how destroyed I was
to turn twenty-nine.
It seemed as if all the fun was finished.
Today on my birthday I remember decades ago
how awestruck I was
to be ten years old.
I realised I would not always be a child.
Today on my birthday I remember nine years ago
how surprised I was
at turning forty.
Where had all the time gone?
Today I’m at peace and quite happy to say
this milestone is one
I’ll likely forget.
It is just another day in my life with
more ups than downs,
some rain and some sun.
Each year brings something new to discover.
Every day’s different,
but also the same.
As I age I find I can step back further,
zoom out on my life
to make it small.
I’m growing old, but I’m still growing,
knowing less and
learning more.
