Water dragon blues

My lizard looks depressed.
He sits and watches
from the couch
for hours, sometimes days.
Now he often can’t be bothered
to even lift his head.
Maybe his life hasn’t turned out
exactly as he’d expected.
Maybe he thought he’d do more
than sit on a couch,
scuttle through leaves
and shit in a pond.
Maybe he listens to the news
from my radio
and shares my despair for the world.
Or maybe he’s just old,
worn out from the scuttling
and scrabbling and scampering,
the fighting and mating
of his youth.
What do I do?
How do you cheer up a dragon?
Is there prozac for reptiles?
I guess change comes from within,
so I’ll just be here for him.
I love you Lizzy.
